IS IT TIME TO MOVE ON FROM SHOW AND TELL?

    Hello Out There

I have had a  lovely day visiting students working in Early Childhood Centres. One student discussed with me that Show and Tell just doesn’t seem to be working.

I wondered, what are other people doing?

When I was educating 3 – 5 yr olds we had “Show and Teach” . Children where able to bring in something that was educational to share with their friends. This changed the focus from Toys to something significant about themselves or their family. To extend on this you could create a stage area with a few chairs and children can choose through out the day to participate.

Here are some links relating to changing “Show and Tell” (please click on the orange text)

in lieu of show and tell, we have tried “book in a bag” (chn bring in their fave book and tell us something about it, we either read it to the whole or large group) and “secret in a box” (chn bring in something from home that fits in the box and give classmates 3 clues to guess the ‘secret’) I have found both to be much more interesting and educational than traditional ‘show and tell’ I would love to hear an other ideas!

I love your ideas, Thank you so much for sharing. I believe creating a sense of wonder for children is so important and you have created that with the “secret in a box”
